THE FIVE CORE ELEMENTS OF SPEAK*

What to expect from our programs

NONVIOLENT COMMUNICATION

Nonviolent Communication (NVC) is a practice or approach to communicating with each other based on identifying Observations, Feelings, Needs, and Requests. All of our SPEAK* work is NVC-informed. Although we do not strictly follow the method or expect that from participants, we value NVC as a strategy to better communicate with each other while in circle and include a short NVC training at the beginning of our programs. We may use NVC language in prompts or use NVC exercises to help participants do some self-exploration.

We run all SPEAK* programs using circle processes, also known as restorative circles.

“The circle is a structured process for organizing effective group communication, relationship building, decision-making, and conflict resolution. The process creates a space apart from our normal ways of being together. The circle embodies and nurtures a philosophy of relationship and interconnectedness that can guide us in all circumstances—in circle and outside of circle.”

CIRCLE PROCESSES

ART

Art provides an outlet beyond our normal methods of communication. In SPEAK* programs we use many different media that some may not consider traditional "art." We offer participants opportunities to share their stories through writing, movement, songwriting, visual arts and performance art. Some have a preference for one, some enjoy all equally. Sometimes, a specific medium is what's needed to express the exact feeling or idea that they have. We consider all of these products, no matter the quality or content, to be art - no limitations or expectations.

Storytelling impacts both the speaker and the listener. We are inspired to speak from the heart when we tell personal stories, and listen from the heart when others tell theirs. A SPEAK* circle is a storytelling circle. All of the prompts we choose to give to participants are meant to encourage them to tell stories about themselves. Their stories may range from telling us about their favorite color to bringing up a buried memory. They may be more abstract than concrete, and may not be linear. We honor all stories equally.

STORYTELLING

COLLABORATION

We could offer a program with NVC, circles, art, and storytelling - but SPEAK* wouldn't be the same without the elements of collaboration. Working together allows participants to practice their NVC skills with each other, treat each other as equals, be inspired by each other's ideas, and be exposed to new life stories. Facilitators model collaboration with each other and with the participants along the way to create a program that will benefit them the most. Authentic collaboration entails connection, compassion, and creativity.
